I reported that the search for this blog isn't working.  It seems like only the very recent posts are being searched, which is not very helpful.  Hopefully the Google/Blogger folks will be able to fix this problem for us!

Mending procedure change (no more pink slips)

[from Peter's email]
Beginning today, we will no longer use the pink mending slips to communicate mending issues. Instead:
  1. Check the item out to MENDING
  2. Take the Checkout slip from the receipt printer, adding an extra inch or so at the bottom when you do
  3. Write a simple explanation of the problem (spine, pages, scratched)
  4. Include your initials and the date.
  5. Place slip securely sticking out the top of the item.

Basha, Hamilton, and Sunset staff - If you need to send an item to Downtown mending, follow the procedure above and place in a courier bin. Downtown staff will place the item on the Mending shelf

Downtown staff - Please all mending on the mending shelves in the Circ work area.A separate process will be set up for Rush mending and Replacement items.

You can choose two ways to start a new page in Word. . . :
  • Horribly wrong: Keep pressing the Enter key until you see the row o' dots tha tdenotes the start of a new page. . . .
  • Impressively neat: Press Ctrl+Enter. Voila! New page.
I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know this. I know the trick in Excel to force the line to wrap in the cell (Alt+Enter). Maybe I should read the rest of the book!

History Dept. Staff & Volunteers

Jean Reynolds from the city's history department has begun a new research project about the San Marcos Hotel. Her staff and volunteers will be coming regularly to use view the Chandler Arizonan on our microfilm reader and save the images to a flash drive. A log plus a flash drive will be stored at our desk for researchers to use. See the white folder called San Marcos Hotel Research Project on the shelf with our notebooks (Policies, Reference Volunteers, Best Sellers, etc.). Each person who needs this material will ask for it at the desk and then return it after use. Thanks for your cooperation!

Slow Gmail tip

From Saren's email:
Just wanted to let you know that Gmail has been kind of slow to connect on the public computers today, and may not connect at all for customers. I had Paul take a look at it, and there is probably not much he can do about it right now, but he did say when customers are trying to connect to Gmail and it is not loading, they can click on a link on the lower right hand side of their screen, which would say Load Basic. This should speed up the connection process.

Paul informed me that there is no trash in the new image. When someone deletes something, it is permanently deleted. No need to find it to delete it permanently from the trash any more!

New Weeding Procedure

Ginger's email:
We have a new method of counting the number of items that we weed/deselect/pull from the collection. This method will distinguish those things that we withdraw due to age, condition, inaccuracy etc. from those that we lose via other means such as missing, lost, damaged, claims returned.

Beginning April 1 change the location on those items that you are physically (item in hand) pulling from the collection to a new home location called WEEDED .

This is easily accomplished by using the global edit feature in workflows. This applies to all materials other than periodicals. Periodicals still need to be deleted. A monthly report will be run that will change all items that have the home location of WEEDED to a home location of delete.

Updated municipal complex map

Someone recently updated the Municipal Complex Map to show where the future city hall is:

And did you realize that they're constructing a new parking garage on the corner of Boston and Washington, across from the old one? (Next to the future fire headquarters.) Hopefully that will give our parking lot some relief!

How to print someone's receipt on the receipt printer

Paul fixed it so that we can print receipts on the receipt printer attached to the PC Reservation console. Basically, he set it up so that it opens Notepad, and this means it will format correctly. You do need to delete some of the extra stuff that comes up, though:

  1. Open the person's account and go to their Checkouts.
  2. File -->Print (will open their Checkouts in Notepad)
  3. (In Notepad) delete everything but the books.
  4. File-->Print again in Notepad (receipt printer should automatically be selected, but make sure).

Clearing the receipt printer buffer

[Updated 12-30-08] You know how irritating it is when you print something that makes the receipt printer go nuts and it won't clear the print job for ages? Thanks to Paul, we now have a way of doing that.
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Double click on the Restart Printers.bat file on the desktop.
  3. Turn the printer on while holding the select button until it beeps at you.
Let me know if this does or doesn't work for you!

GED transcripts

From Saren's email:
". . . Adult Ed. staff have access to pull up the test scores for students through the Arizona Dept. of Ed. site with a special login. It does not matter if the students did not take the test at our location. Adult Ed. can print off a certified copy or just a copy of the student's GED transcripts. After a certain year (depending on the year the test was taken) they are only able to print off a copy of the results.

I also found out that sometimes students are issued a business check from DES to pay for the GED test, and that is acceptable. They just will not accept any personal checks."

They're still offering English classes at the CCCC, but they won't be having any more until the beginning of the year. They're expanding their offerings and said they'd send us a flier when they have one. They do not require any documentation to participate in their classes, something to keep in mind for folks who don't qualify for ours.

For as little as $100 ($8.34 per month) you can prevent sexual abuse before it happens and STOP the abuse from continuing by funding a Casa abuse prevention program to an entire classroom of nearly 30 children. Statistically, there are as many as 7 children in each classroom who will be molested an average of 8 years. Your donation means Casa can save hundreds, hopefully thousands of children in the next year. Last school year, as a result of Casa’s prevention programs in schools, 18 children disclosed to Casa they were being sexually abused, and these cases were turned over to police. Help Casa identify and help many more children this Holiday!

Chandler Fire Department Christmas Program
This program is for Christmas time only and not ongoing through the year. The CFD assists families whose names come via Chandler School District (Susan Horan). The CFD assists approximately 100 families each year. The CFD does not do sign up via phone calls or walk-ins.

Hamilton High School adopts needy families with children that attend the school. Donations needed this holiday season include clothing, grocery gift cards, toys for younger siblings and teenage items. Contact Dia Mundle for more information. Donations accepted until December 12th.

My Sister’s Place provides domestic violence victims and their children with safe shelter, meals and basic needs for 30 – 45 days. The Christmas program relies solely on donations. A list of specific needs is available by contacting Peggy Dudinyak at 480-821-1024.

Dealing with Reorders

Ginger reminded me to clear out my reorders from Sirsi, and I had to get help remembering the steps. This is mostly for me. . .
  1. Shift F12 to Edit Item
  2. Change Search field to General
  3. Click Set Options for Item Search button on top left of that window
  4. Enter your criteria (e.g. Item type, language)
  5. Choose Reorder as location
  6. Click Enter
  7. Click Enter
  8. Click item you want to deal with
  9. Click Modify Copy
  10. Click on the copy that says Reorder if more than one copy comes up and then Modify Copy again.
  11. Change Home Location to Delete
  12. Click Ok
  13. Click Return to search list.

Morningstar Trial - reminder

This from Lynne -
We seem to have renewed interest in getting online information from Morningstar. Currently we have a trial going on (see notes at Lucy and Desi) which gives free access to the full content of Morningstar. When that goes away, however, our customers can still have remote access to the print version of Morningstar by going to http://mfb.morningstar.com . Subscriber ID is the ref desk email address and password is library. Perhaps because the ICMA rep was here recently, city staffers have asked for this info. You may have to remind them that Morningstar's specialty is mutual funds (they won't find anything about financial services such as ICMA). They also include stock info, but not in the same depth as our print version of Value Line.

Computer card to regular card - glitch

David just shared with me something I didn't know. When you switch a person's card from computer card to a regular (e.g. Adult) card, you must Renew Privilege (Alt F11) for the user, before they will be able to check items out, even if the date on their card appears fine. It's this glitch that is the reason why sometimes when we've turned a computer card into a regular card, they still get the message that no more charges are allowed.
After you've renewed their privilege, you can remove the date if they're a Chandler resident.

Historical directories

For the record, the Chandler Museum has a few OLD city directories (from the 1930s, the staff person told me). Mesa Library has quite a few (later ones should include Chandler), and they are in the Mesa Room, which is open limited hours. Anna is the person who is in charge of this room, and it's best that people make reservations in advance. It's open approximately 10:30 - 4. Telephone is 480-644-2207.

I updated the GED testing info online according to what Donna gave me. I put the updated date and tried to draw attention to the changes on the homepage in the lefthand blue navigation bar. Court-ordered community service

Today I stumbled across this great page on the city of Tempe's site, listing options for those seeking to do court-ordered community service hours:

I printed off a page with East Valley agencies and am putting it in the volunteering file. I'll probably link to it from our volunteering page, in case we need to refer to it in the future. Might be a good job for a volunteer, to update this list. . .

I was hoping to get a list from Maricopa County, but the woman at the Community Restitution Program said that they only work with Adult Probationers, and that if we get one of them, have them call 602-619-1914 to speak with John, who can assign them to a community service job.

I think mostly what we get are lesser offenses, like DUIs, which don't involve probation. I spoke with someone at the Chandler Municipal Court, and she says they don't have a list (non since she's been there). They are told to go to "any nonprofit." This is probably where most of the people we get are coming from.

Just found out that people who live in Queen Creek but are Pinal County residents must pay for a Maricopa County Library District card, even though they have a branch in Queen Creek. At the moment the fee is $40/yr, but it goes up to $50/yr in September.

GIMP - new photo editing program

Jeff mentioned that we're going to have the (unfortunately-named) program GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) on our public computers with the forthcoming image. Jeff says it will probably be a while till it is installed, and that Sunset will get it first. I thought we might want to familiarize ourselves with it, because it's certain we'll be getting questions about how to use it as soon as we make it available to the public. It's installed on Lucy and Desi, and there is a shortcut on the desktop to it.

Typical uses include creating graphics and logos, resizing and cropping
photos, altering colours, combining multiple images, removing unwanted image
features, and converting between different image formats.
It is often used as a free software replacement for
Adobe Photoshop, the
most widely used bitmap editor in the printing and graphics industries; however,

Valley Metro, anyone?

I just have a dickens of a time using the Valley Metro site to find routes. I can never seem to find the right cross streets to put in, and am constantly being given a list of streets and landmarks that have nothing to do with what I put in. Does anyone feel confident in their skills at finding bus routes? Please, if you understand the site, will you help me? I am tired of cringing when people ask me about bus routes, and if things keep going the way they're going (viz. gas prices & the economy), we're probably going to be seeing more and more folks taking the bus. Wonder if we can get someone from Valley Metro to come help us? Or maybe I just need to get my brain to engage. . .

Remote Authentication Troubleshooting

I keep calling Jeff for help about remote authentication problems and finding out that there isn't a problem (sorry, Jeff!). This is for me, more than anyone (thanks, Jeff!):

Patron can't log into databases remotely. . .
  • Of course, check their card number and PIN.
  • Card or PIN wrong? If the card or PIN have to be fixed, keep in mind that the card will still not work until 15 minutes after (probably) the (next) hour, when the Unicorn Server syncs with the EZProxy database. (If you made the update at 1:10, it should be available after 1:15, but if you made the update at 1:20, it will not be until after 2:15.)
  • Card number and PIN were Ok to begin with?
  • Try to duplicate their problem using our PCReservation computer.
  • See the instructions taped onto the base of the monitor about using the Remote Desktop to do this.
  • Try their card and PIN to access one of the remotely accessible databases (e.g. Masterfile), and if that isn't working, try your own card and PIN or one of the guest cards in the drawer.
  • If none of the cards works, it could be an issue of the server having problems. Report this to Jeff.
  • If your card works, but theirs still does not, you might let them try a guest card and PIN (test it first).
  • If the guest card that worked for you does not work for them, you could try having them clear their cookies and temporary Internet files in the browser settings (in IE 6.0, it's under Tools/Internet Options).
  • If that doesn't work, it could mean that it's an issue of the port's being blocked on their end [see following].
If you didn't make any changes to their card or PIN, ask them if they are at work and if there's a possibility that Port 2048 may be blocked. This is a port that most serious firewalls will block (not usually home computer firewalls) and would have to be specifically unblocked. They will need to ask their IT folks about this. It has also happened that someone has had a hardware firewall at home. They will need to disable it or figure out on their own (we cannot do this for them) how to unblock port 2048 to use our databases.

1. Check your network connection. [this probably won't be the case]
2. Make sure your username and password for the particular network you’re accessing are correct and match. [we have it saved, so this probably won't be the case]
3. You may have logged into a network and not been properly logged out…wait about 5-10 minutes and try again. [this might affect us, unfortunately - we probably need to make sure to log out before signing in at the other machine]
4. Try using another browser.[i think this means closing that window and opening a new browser window]

Sync your Lotus notes contacts

I've noticed that oftentimes there are Arizona Republic articles out there for free, where if you do an archive search on AZ Rep and it says that you will need to buy the article.
E.g. Did an archive search for it. Then did a Google search for the exact title: New law brings curfew, limits for teen drivers and found this article:

AZ Rep microfilm has local sections

I rediscovered today that the Arizona Republic microfilm has all of the Valley sections (e.g. Chandler Republic, of course, but also Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Scottsdale, NW and NE). Had someone needing an article from the Gilbert Tribune that neither he nor I could find online, and he'd tried the Southeast Regional library, who'd looked in their database with no luck. BTW, it IS possible to use the Internet on the fiche/film reader computer. Just try going to MS help and then going to help online. I was able to send him an email with the article attached from that computer.

When will I get my stimulus payment check?

Had a question tonight about when a patron would be getting his check. This is pretty easy to find out (it's prominent on the IRS homepage), but FYI:

Solution to demand to install at ref desk

You know when you're surfing at the ref desk, and suddenly your browser is demanding that you install something from a Microsoft Office disk?: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." You try to cancel the install and you get an error message and get caught in an annoying loop for a few seconds?
Ron and Jeff have given us a solution. Paste this in the dialog box: p:\apps\microsoft\office\2000SP3\disk1

Jeff says we may have to do this again periodically.

GED testing tidbit

Learned from Donna today that people who have never taken the GED test don't have to start by taking the entire thing (comprised of 5 sections). They DO have to pay the $65 up front, though, and then they can take one or more section at a time. Retesting in a section they don't pass is still $10 a test. Not clear on whether they still have to pass it within 3 years or if they really only have 3 times that they can take a section. . .

New fax machine & confirmation reports

Noticed today that the setting had been changed so that the fax was automatically spitting out a confirmation report for every fax sent. Found the manual for our fax machine model online and discovered how to change this back to not give an automatic print confirmation (if someone needs one they'll have to press the setup button, 2, 3):
Print fax confirmation reports
1. Press Setup.
2. Press 2, and then press 1.
This selects Print Report and then selects Fax Confirmation.
3. Press right arrow enough times to select Off Does not print a fax confirmation report when you send andreceive faxes successfully
, and then press OK.

Goodwill Career Center faxing

I called, and although the woman said their fax machine was outbound only, she said that people may receive a fax at their center if it's job search- or DES-related, but that the person will need to be there at the time they receive the fax. They will not hold faxes for people, and they won't give out the fax number unless you're at the center. This is at SW Alma School Rd. and Ray Rd., next to the Goodwill store.

Deleting info in Workflows

Important info from Peter's email
Our current version of Workflows requires you to delete a line in the Address or Extended Info tab area using the following process:
1) Click on the line to be deleted. You do not need to highlight the entire line. Simply click on the line once.
2) Near the top right hand corner of the 'Modify User' box you will see a blue star. Hovering over that star will reveal the word DELETE. Click on that once.
This deletes the entire line.

I have noticed that even if you delete all the text from a field and then go back to "Make More Changes" to make sure it's gone, it doesn't show up. The supposedly deleted item appears as if it's been deleted and will not show up until you do a Display User or Modify User and go back in. It's pretty tricky.

Autorecovery on Public PCs

Autorecovery should work on the public PCs, provided the patron's been typing a few minutes. The guys have configured Word to do an autorecovery save into the D Drive. If a patron's computer loses power in the middle of their unsaved work, you can try the following:

  1. Have them log back in (should be able to click on "Click here if your session was interrupted" and just enter PIN).
  2. Open Word.
  3. File-->Open (should open the D drive's files folder)
  4. Use the "Files of type" dropdown arrow to select "All Files"
  5. Look for a file named something to the effect of "Autorecovery save of Document..." Most likely it will be "Autorecovery save of Document 1.asd"

I saw Jeff do this for a young woman today, and I experimented myself and it worked for me, too.
From Jeff: The autorecovery threshold is set to every 1 minute. From my experience, it works about 90% of the time.

GED Books available in the Learning Lab - Marybeth's update

I discovered that our Learning Lab instructors will give their GED study books (they still say CORE in the catalog) to anyone who needs them to check out. You can send someone up if we don't have any on the shelf, if they are open. . .
Marybeth: "We recognize that the GED materials in the general collection are very popular! As a way to get our materials into the hands of our customers, we have allowed SOME of the materials that are housed in the learning lab to be checked out by the general public (do not need to be enrolled in one of our classes). The available materials have been processed and are available on a separate, marked shelf in the Lab. They can be viewed during the open hours of the lab. We would like to see interested folks come to the lab to see the materials themselves so they can talk to one of the instructors about the lab, our classes, how to use the materials, and other strategies that they can be doing in attempt to achieve their learning goals. Checkout is for the normal 3-week time period using their CPL library card. They should be checked out and returned using the normal circulation procedures and the overdue process is applicable to all users, regardless if they are in our classes or not.
A few requests:
The opportunity to view/checkout materials is available during open lab hours only since during the non-lab hours we have classes going on and it would be a disruption.
The materials available for checkout may vary from day to day since our classroom instructors may pull items for use in their classes (that is the priority for these materials).
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Wireless Duplicate User Errors

Ron discovered a new and interesting error. A guy was getting a duplicate user error message for the wireless, and we did not see his card number in the list. He couldn't log in with one of our guest cards, either. Ron found his IP number (somewhere in his Wireless settings) and checked that against current users and there it was! He was logged in with yet another card, and it was not letting his IP go. Ron logged him out, and all was well.

Pew Report: Online Activities & Pursuits

There are several major findings in this report. One is this: For help with a variety of common problems, more people turn to the internet than consult experts or family members to provide information and resources. Another key insight is that members of Gen Y are the leading users of libraries for help solving problems and in more general patronage. . . .

The survey results challenge the assumption that libraries are losing relevance in the internet age. Libraries drew visits by more than half of Americans (53%) in the past year for all kinds of purposes, not just the problems mentioned in this survey. And it was the young adults in tech-loving Generation Y (age 18-30) who led the pack. Compared to their elders, Gen Y members were the most likely to use libraries for problem-solving information and in general patronage for any purpose. Furthermore, it is young adults who are the most likely to say they will use libraries in the future when they encounter problems: 40% of Gen Y said they would do that, compared with 20% of those above age 30 who say they would go to a library.

Can't use delete key?

Helpful email from Saren:
I had an interesting question from a customer today wondering why when he highlighted text on his Word document, and hit the delete key it did not delete. I could not see why it was not deleting, but you could still hit the backspace key to remove the text. I asked Jeff about it, and he figured it out.

When text is highlighted and the delete key is pressed, you will see on the bottom tool bar, left hand corner a message saying Delete Block? No (Yes) . So to delete the highlighted text you either need to press Y on your keyboard, or N if you don't want it deleted. This is a default setting right now, but customers can omit this function with each session by going to Tools, Options, Select the General Tab and uncheck Help for Word Perfect Users . By unchecking this box, text will be deleted right away without having to press Y. Jeff hopes to change this down the road, but this is the way it is on the public computers for now.

News from the U.S. Department of Education about the 2008-09 FAFSA forms:

For 2008–09 paper FAFSAs will not be available for order in bulk. Students will be able to obtain a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or by visiting www.edpubs.org. Students may request up to three copies of the paper application and should receive their FAFSAs in three to seven business days.

Railway Museum collection

We rarely have customers request these items, but in case you do their collection is a non-lending collection. No PIN through email

From Saren's email:
I verified with Peter and Dan, and Peter prefers that we do not give out a customer's PIN number through our email service. He would prefer they either call or come in person to get that information. On the phone have the customer verify their phone number and address, and in person either look at their ID or verify the address and phone number. He also said if we end up giving a customer their library card number and PIN number over the phone, we do not need to count it as a look-up.

Opening WPS (Works) files

It's possible to open Works (WPS) files on public computers, even though it may seem like it's not.
  1. You MUST copy the file to the computer first.
  2. Open MS Word.
  3. Use the file open in Word to find the file and open it.
  4. Follow directions to install the converter when prompted.
  5. You MAY have to tell the computer several times to "Ignore" a problem with a registry key (Jeff is looking into fixing this)
Bonus steps:
  1. Recommend that the person save the file as a Word document at that point.
  2. Tell the person to take the extra step to save as a '.doc' when they create files on their home computer using Works in the future. This will save them the headache of not being able to open their files on other computers.

From the Federal Student Aid office: "The 2008-2009 Federal School Code List will be available as of November 1, 2007, on the Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) Web site at http://ifap.ed.gov/. You will be able to search the document online as well as print, download, and share the PDF file if desired. The online document will be updated on a quarterly basis with an errata sheet, to easily identify changes."
The list will no longer be distributed in hard-copy format.

Problems with Anti Virus on public computers

From Ron: "With the new Anti Virus upgrade, we are finding problems such as this [inability to open certain pdfs] and are able to correct them if we can see the problem as it happens . We have the ability to log the problem and make any corrections, but we have to do it prior to the next session starting because the next restart eliminates any logs. If you can let the rest of the reference staff know this, and have then contact us as soon as these problems occur, we can come out and determine what setting we need to change in the Anti Virus settings to eliminate the issue."

Running a chkdsk on a flash drive!

I discovered today that you can run a chkdsk on a flash drive, not just a floppy! Follow the 'Repairing disks' directions in the 'Care and Feeding' manual, remembering to put the correct drive letter in (not 'a,' which would be the floppy drive). Today, for example, the drive was the letter 'g,' but you never know. Take a look in 'My Computer' first to confirm the drive letter.

New Business Listings

Joe tracked down a source for new business listings. There is a "Business Leads" column in both the Arizona Business Gazette and the Phoenix Business Journal, which lists new businesses in the greater Phoenix area (nothing limited to Chandler, unfortunately).

Holds for WEBCAT

We just saw a rash of holds for WEBCAT. Dan sent an email about this a while back -- I've long since deleted it -- but we can just delete these holds. They're generated when a hold is placed in the system but can't be tied to a patron, so there's nothing we can do with them. Just delete the hold and route the item wherever Sirsi tells you to route it (usually back to the shelf).

Real Estate Exam

Information about the Experior exam, from Deidre and Lynne's emails:

The Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE), a government agency, is charged with enforcing the laws and rules governing the real estate profession in Arizona. Thomson Prometric, formerly Experior Assessments, is an independent, professional examination company under contract with ADRE to develop and administer licensing examinations for salespersons and brokers in real estate, cemetery and membership camping sales. Arizona is not reciprocal with any other state or country. An applicant for a real estate, cemetery or membership camping license in Arizona must meet the Arizona requirements in effect at the time of application regardless of the applicant's licensed status in another state.

These exams seem to change ownership often. The last time I called Learning Express to find out if they were keeping up with new editions/owners of the test material, they claimed they were current within the last 6 months. Our database shows Thomson/Prometric (Experior) for the real estate exams.

Car hit in Library parking lot

A car was hit in the Library parking lot today. I paged to see if someone with the license number and model of car was in the Library, but no one showed up. I called the Police, but they told me they do not send out an Officer if the incident happened in a private parking lot (although it is the City parking lot, but who knows), so all the driver needed to do was leave a note with her name, insurance information, and phone number on the vehicle she hit. That may be helpful for future fender benders.

Helpful tips (PDFs and Workflows)

Just wanted to pass along a couple of things I have come across lately that may be helpful.
The first one is about printing a PDF file. Today a gentleman's print job was not being sent over to the printer, and since there were no pending print jobs I thought something was wrong with the printer connection. Of course it was first thing in the morning, but there always seems to be a print job or two pending. We called Ron and the issue was not our printer, but the PDF file the customer was trying to print. Apparently the document had been set up not to print, but was not giving any type of message to let us know that. The solution was to copy and paste the document or selected text into Word, and then print from Word. I would gather this does not happen very often, but in the future if a PDF file will not print, then just copy it into Word.

The other thing I found out about is on Workflows. Sometimes it is almost impossible to figure out when a library card was issued to a customer, but here is the trick. When you pull up the card information, go ahead and click on the customer's name, and that will give you a quick snapshot of the account, and will also tell you the user date created and privilege granted date. The user date created is when the account was first set up, and the privilege granted date is when the card was last renewed. Probably some of you already knew this, but this little trick does come in handy.

Thanks to Jan, I've figured out who's in charge of lowering the flags to half-mast. Jennifer Honea tells B&F to lower the flags, after she gets the order from the governor's office. Creating and Transferring Carts in B&T (new procedure as of Spring 07)

Creating a cart

  1. Go to the Carts tab.
  2. Don’t use the Quick Setup. Instead, click the small link that says “Create New Cart – Full Setup.”
  3. Name your cart. We should have these four carts each month:
    · DT Replacements mm/yy – Fic
    · DT Replacements mm/yy – NF
    · DT Customer Requests mm/yy – Fic
    · DT Customer Requests mm/yy – NF
  4. Make sure Cart Availability is Open, and Cart Visibility is Private.
  5. Check the Grid Enable: Yes box.
  6. Click the Create Cart button.

Carts should be transferred at the end of the relevant month, or when the total quantity reaches 25. If you have the mending for the month, please transfer both the replacements and customer request carts at the end of the month.

Transferring a cart

  1. Go to the Carts tab.
  2. Make a note of the total list and discount prices for the cart. Forward this information to Lynne.
  3. Use the Select Function pull-down menu to choose Transfer.
  4. Click GINGER MILOSERNY, then click the Add button.
  5. Uncheck “Keep a copy of my cart.”
  6. Click the Transfer button.

Windows Vista / Office 2007 converter

Ron installed a converter for files created with Windows Vista/Office 2007 on Ready Ref 1 and 2. So if someone comes in with a file on a disk that's too new to open with our regular computers, we can put them on a Ready Ref machine.

"The Secret"

In case you haven't been bombarded with this request yet, or if you have but you just can't remember the author to look it up:

People usually ask just for "The Secret" or maybe "The Secret laws of attraction." The title of the book is "The Secret," the author is Rhonda Byrne, and the phrase "Law of attraction" appears in the book's blurb but is not part of the title. We've ordered a lot of copies of the book and audiobook, and there are a lot of holds. (It's been on Oprah -- small wonder.)

People might also ask for the title "The Secret" and an author of Michael Beckwith. Michael Beckwith appears on the DVD version, although we don't yet have a full catalog record for the DVD, so a catalog search on his name won't find it. You can find the DVD by searching for "Secret" and "Byrne".
